A useful influence map is not a KOL list sorted by followers. It shows who helps buyers recognise a problem, who explains standards, who confirms that a product can be implemented and who can stop a proposal from moving forward.
For a Vietnamese company entering a Southeast Asian market, this map prevents two expensive mistakes: booking a visible name who never reaches the buying group, or speaking only to distributors while ignoring the communities already shaping the category.
Start with the buying decision, not the platform
Describe the decision: is the buyer selecting a supplier, testing a product, replacing an approach or seeking budget approval? Map users, technical evaluators, Procurement, Finance, C-level leaders and distributors. Choose LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, a conference or trade media only after you know where each group looks for evidence.
The 2025 6sense study reports that buying groups in its sample usually rank their shortlist before contacting sales. The influence map therefore needs to cover pre-meeting research, when buyers compare independent voices and vendor material.
Map four layers: buyer, question, voice and proof
Give every node four fields: the buyer group it affects, the question it answers, the person or organisation buyers trust, and the asset that can carry the proof forward. A file containing only names and channels is difficult to brief and cannot show which influence layer is missing.
A useful influence map connects a speaker to a specific decision inside the buying group.

| Layer | Question to record | Example data | Output |
|---|---|---|---|
| Buyer | Who uses, approves, pays and carries risk? | Role, seniority, company type | Buying-group map |
| Question | What moves or stops the proposal? | Claim, price, standards, supply | Question bank |
| Voice | Whom does the buyer trust on that issue? | Expert, trainer, streamer, media | Influence shortlist |
| Proof | Which format carries the answer? | Demo, case, panel, FAQ | Asset plan |
| Measurement | What signal shows influence? | Target account, inquiry, reuse | Measurement plan |
Find influence nodes from real industry evidence
Start with trade-show agendas, speaker lists, specialist authors, distributor channels, professional associations, webinars, technical communities and people buyers repeatedly cite. Review recent content, comments, participants and working relationships; follower count is only one secondary field.
Interview sales, distributors and past customers. Ask who gets called when the product fails, which documents are forwarded internally, and whose name appears repeatedly in buying conversations.
Weight nodes by relevance and ability to create proof
Score proximity to buyers, subject expertise, communication skill, claim history, audience overlap, commercial relationships and asset reuse rights. A respected expert who cannot discuss the category under an employer policy may be valuable for research but unsuitable for a campaign.
For a role comparison, use the matrix covering experts, distributor staff and industry streamers.
Turn the map into a testable pilot
Choose one buyer question, two or three influence nodes and a short asset chain. An expert might explain the criteria, a specialist streamer demonstrates use, and a distributor trainer answers implementation questions. Each asset needs an owner, claim source, approval route, usage rights and measurement point.
For a cross-border campaign, local operation helps verify the person, language and channel in-market instead of relying on a remote list.
What IMVN includes in an influence-map handoff
IMVN can deliver a buying-group map, question bank, role-based longlist, credibility and conflict notes, format recommendations and a pilot plan. The final shortlist is locked only after availability, speaking permission, employer approval, content scope and budget are confirmed.
When expanding into another market, do not copy the map unchanged. The guide to localising an influence map shows what can remain fixed and what needs fresh research.
